IDEPSCA is part of the Free Our Cars Coalition working alongside other Los Angeles County based organizations and communities. Together we are launching our campaign to change unfair towing practices. The campaign will collect anonymous stories from victims of unfair impounds via 213 814 5777 or at www.liberennuestrosautos.org and offer to connect them to trainings on their legal rights when stopped by the police. We hear stories from immigrant workers and their families about predatory and unfair car impounds that push them deeper into poverty due to millions of dollars in fees and lost wages across the county. We hear driving is not a luxury it is a need. I need to drive my children to school! I need to drive to work! I need to survive! These are stories that we need to hear. However, immigrant families don’t often get to share their stories! When we hear police sirens our bodies start to shake, there is a genuine fear of the police, the same police that impounds our cars unjustly through so called sobriety checkpoints. But today we say no more! As subjects of our own reality it is important we tell our stories in order to shape and influence policies that can put an end to the unfair car impoundments targeting immigrant communities. fotos by Cristina Gonzalez
